West Virginia women’s basketball suffered their fifth loss of the season last night to a tough Baylor team by a score of 75-65. The matchup marked the Mountaineers’ fourth loss on the road, something they have been struggling with throughout the season.
WVU was led by Jordan Harrison who scored 20 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
“Definitely a game for us to learn from. We will have many more games that mean as much as this one did. The best thing for us to do is to learn from it, so that way when it presents itself again, we will be ready,” Harrison said after the game.
Baylor had four of their players in double-digit scoring. They were led by senior Aaronette Vonleh, who scored 21 points in the win. This was a rivalry game that both teams badly wanted to win, but Baylor looked one step ahead from the opening tip.
“I was waiting for us to make one of our runs that we are used to making. We didn’t convert. We didn’t make shots,” said WVU head coach Mark Kellogg. “They are good enough that when you make a mistake they make you pay,” he added.
The Mountaineers are still in a good position as the back end of conference play approaches. “We will go back and get it figured out and see if we can continue to get better as we get a little closer to the post-season,” Kellogg said.
The team is looking to raise their stock for both the Big 12 and the NCAA tournament. They will return home for a game against Cincinnati on Feb. 15.
