(By Griffin Floyd, WV Sports Now) MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU Baseball hadn’t won a single Super Regional game in their 134-year history as recently as 30 hours ago. Now they’re on the way to the College World Series for the first time in program history, stomping the life out of Cal Poly with a combined score of 28-3 over two games played.
The Mountaineers fell behind briefly in Game 2 before pummeling Cal Poly for five homers and 17 unanswered runs. After racking up overtime hours the previous weekend, West Virginia’s pitching staff cruised through the Super Regional. Riding with the lead the previous day, Chansen Cole struck out 11 across seven relatively stress-free innings on June 5; staff ace Maxx Yehl went five frames in the clincher, a relative non-story as West Virginia’s bats left no doubt.
Even the banging bats represented only a fraction of the story. Mountaineers fans continued to put their team on the map as one of the best home atmospheres in the nation, packing the recently-christened ‘Randy’s Ridge’ hours before the noon starting times. While inclement weather in the area put the celebration on hold for 98 minutes, it’s now on to Omaha, where WVU Baseball will face one of Troy and Little Rock in the opening round of the College World Series.
Here’s the reaction from fans and media after an historic weekend at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
