In her second event in Paris, WVU assistant swimming and diving coach Sydney Pickrem qualified for her second Olympic semifinal on Friday.
Pickrem, who represents her country of Canada in the ongoing 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, began competing in the women’s 200-meter individual medley on Friday. The event is the second of two that Pickrem qualified for this year, with the other being the 200-meter breaststroke, in which she swam on Wednesday.
After placing ninth overall in the breaststroke semifinals, Pickrem kicked off her final event in a big way Friday morning, placing fourth overall and winning her heat in the preliminary round by 0.07 seconds over the United States’ Kate Douglass.
West Virginia added Pickrem to its swimming and diving coaching staff this spring, and she will be with the team in the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The Mountaineers placed sixth of eight teams and last of five teams at the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships this March.
Sydney Pickrem will swim on behalf of West Virginia and Canada at 3:31 p.m. ET on Friday. She will swim in lane five of the day’s first semifinals heat. The event can be viewed on Peacock and the NBC Olympics app.
If Pickrem places in the top half of the 16 semifinalists, she will move on to the medal round on Saturday at 3:08 p.m. ET.
