WVU short stop JJ Wetherholt may not have gone to the Guardians like some mocks projected, but Cleveland will still be getting a Mountaineer in this draft.
Junior reliever turned starter Aidan Major was drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Monday, going 146th overall to the Cleveland Guardians. Major is the fourth WVU player or commit to go in this year’s draft, going just minutes after reliever David Hagaman.
Major had a breakout season in 2024, unexpectedly earning the role of Friday night starter for WVU after injuries in the starting rotation forced Major out of the bullpen. He was shut down halfway through the year due to his own injuries before making a return for a Tucson Regional victory over Grand Canyon.
Rounds three through 10 of the MLB Draft continue on Monday with several eligible Mountaineers still on the board. Rounds 11 through 20 will take place on Tuesday to conclude the three-day event in Arlington, Texas.
