Big 12 Basketball Weekly Recap — January 18

We are now two weeks into Big 12 conference play and the Big 12 continues to make its case as the best conference in college basketball.

A week of upsets shook up the order of the AP Poll, and the Big 12 featured a whopping eight teams in it this week, with those teams being Kansas at third, Houston at fifth, Baylor at ninth, Oklahoma at 15th, TCU at 19th, BYU at 20th, Iowa State at 24th, and Texas Tech at 25th. The Big 12 also has Texas receiving votes.

As of games through Jan. 17, 10 of the 14 teams have four or fewer losses with every team having played at least 16 games. Oklahoma State joined West Virginia as teams in the conference without a winning record.

Let’s take a look at each Big 12 team and how they fared in games over the last week. This list is sorted alphabetically.

No. 9 Baylor (14-3, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Baylor won a home game against Cincinnati 62-59. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Baylor managed to hold on for the win.

This past Tuesday, Baylor lost a road game against Kansas State 68-64 in overtime. Baylor had a six-point lead with three minutes left in regulation but could not hold on and ended up taking their first conference loss of the season.

Up next for Baylor is a road game against Texas on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against No. 19 TCU on Saturday, Jan. 27.

No. 20 BYU (14-3, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, BYU won a road game against UCF 63-58. BYU led by double digits at different points in the second half but managed to hold on for the win.

This past Tuesday, BYU won a Top 25 showdown at home against No. 24 Iowa State 87-72. Iowa State kept it close in the first half, then BYU ran away with it in the second half.

Up next for BYU is another Top 25 showdown against No. 25 Texas Tech on the road on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against No. 5 Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Cincinnati (13-4, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Cincinnati lost a road game against No. 14 Baylor 62-59. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Baylor managed to hold on for the win while holding Cincinnati to its lowest scoring output of the season.

This past Tuesday, Cincinnati won a home game against No. 19 TCU 81-77 in overtime. TCU led with 24 seconds left in regulation, but Cincinnati tied it up and eventually squeaked it out in overtime.

Up next for Cincinnati is a home game against No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a road game against. No. 3 Kansas on Monday, Jan. 22.

No. 5 Houston (15-2, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Houston lost a road game against TCU 68-67. Houston led by as much as 12 in the first half and then TCU kept it close in the second half and scored the game-winning layup with six seconds left in the game.

Yesterday, Houston won a Top 25 showdown at home against No. 25 Texas Tech 77-54. Texas Tech kept it close early on, but it was all Houston from there.

Up next for Houston is a home game against UCF on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a road game against No. 20 BYU on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

No. 24 Iowa State (13-4, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Iowa State won a home game against Oklahoma State 66-42. This was the third time this season in which Iowa State held an opponent to under 45 points in a game.

This past Tuesday, Iowa State lost a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 20 BYU 87-72. BYU ran away with it in the second half and the 87 points were the most Iowa State had allowed in a game this season.

Up next for Iowa State is another Top 25 showdown on the road against TCU on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against Kansas State on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

No. 3 Kansas (15-2, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Kansas won a home game against No. 9 Oklahoma 78-66. Oklahoma kept it close in the first half and then Kansas ran away with it in the second half.

This past Tuesday, Kansas won a road game at Oklahoma State 90-66. Kansas held the lead the entire game and this was the third time in which Kansas has scored at least 90 points in a game this season.

Up next for Kansas is a road game against West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against Cincinnati on Monday, Jan. 22.

Kansas State (13-4, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Kansas State lost a road game against Texas Tech 60-59. Kansas State led 33-22 at halftime but a strong second half propelled Texas Tech to victory despite being outgained in both field goal percentage and rebounds.

This past Tuesday, Kansas State won a home game against No. 9 Baylor 68-64 in overtime. Baylor had a six-point lead with three minutes left in regulation, but Kansas State managed to rally back for the overtime win.

Up next for Kansas State is a home game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 24 Iowa State on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

No. 15 Oklahoma (14-3, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Oklahoma lost a road game against No. 3 Kansas 78-66. Oklahoma kept it close in the first half and then Kansas ran away with it in the second half.

Yesterday, Oklahoma won a home game against West Virginia 77-63. West Virginia kept it close in the first half, then it was all Oklahoma in the second half.

Up next for Oklahoma is a road game against Cincinnati on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against Texas on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Oklahoma State (8-9, 0-4 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Oklahoma State lost a road game against Iowa State 66-42. Their 42 points scored were their fewest in a game this season.

This past Tuesday, Oklahoma State lost a home game against No. 3 Kansas 90-66. Oklahoma State never held a lead in this one and this loss drops them back below .500 on the season.

Up next for Oklahoma State is a road game against Kansas State on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against No. 19 TCU on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

No. 19 TCU (13-4, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, TCU won at home against No. 2 Houston 68-67. Houston led by as much as 12 in the first half and then TCU kept it close in the second half and scored the game-winning layup with six seconds left in the game.

This past Tuesday, TCU lost a road game to Cincinnati 81-77 in overtime. TCU led with 24 seconds left in regulation, but Cincinnati tied it up and eventually squeaked it out in overtime.

Up next for TCU is a Top 25 showdown at home against No. 24 Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a road game against Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Texas (12-5, 1-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Texas lost on the road against West Virginia 76-73. The game was tightly contested throughout, and West Virginia managed to squeak out the upset win.

Yesterday, Texas lost a home game against UCF 77-71. Texas held a lead for most of the game until they surrendered it late in the second half.

Up next for Texas is a home game against No. 9 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a road game against No. 15 Oklahoma on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

No. 25 Texas Tech (14-3, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Texas Tech won at home against Kansas State 60-59. Kansas State led 33-22 at halftime but a strong second half propelled Texas Tech to victory despite being outgained in both field goal percentage and rebounds.

Yesterday, Texas Tech lost a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 5 Houston 77-54, making them the last team to suffer a conference loss on the season. Texas Tech kept it close early on, but it was all Houston from there.

Up next for Texas Tech is a Top 25 showdown at home against No. 20 BYU on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a road game against No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 27.

UCF (11-5, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, UCF lost a home game against No. 18 BYU 63-58. UCF trailed by double digits at different points in the second half but couldn’t manage to rally back for the win.

Yesterday, UCF won a road game against Texas 77-71. Texas held a lead for most of the game until they surrendered it late in the second half.

Up next for UCF is a road game against No. 5 Houston on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a home game against West Virginia on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

West Virginia (6-11, 1-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, West Virginia won a home game against No. 25 Texas 76-73. The game was tightly contested throughout, and West Virginia managed to squeak out the upset win.

Yesterday, West Virginia lost a road game against No. 15 Oklahoma 77-63. West Virginia kept it close in the first half, then it was all Oklahoma in the second half.

Up next for West Virginia is a home game against No. 3 Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 20. After that is a road game against UCF on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
