Three more Mountaineers, including highest-rated recruit in program history hit transfer portal

West Virginia baseball is only in the beginning of their offseason, but the hits have only began to come in following a historic season.

The Mountaineers lost a total of five players who have entered the transfer portal since the conclusion of the season. Michael Kilker and Ben Hampton were the first two hits, with Hampton’s impact being the biggest.

Hampton was WVU’s Friday night starter this year and had started on the weekend since he arrived on campus in 2020-2021.

West Virginia had three more players enter the portal recently with Evan Smith, Chris Sleeper, and Alvin ‘Tre’ Keels all hitting the portal.

Sleeper and Smith come at not much surprise. Sleeper threw only 3.1 innings this season, but has high upside after being named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team in 2022. Smith played in 25 games this season, starting five of them. He had 35 at-bats, hitting .171, with six RBI.

Keels thought is one that should come as a surprise to WVU. Keels is the highest ranked recruit in program history, being ranked as the No. 66 overall recruit by Perfect Game when he came to school this past year. Keels played in only 11 games this year, with five at-bats, and had one hit.
