As West Virginia increased their win streak to nine games, they have also increased their chances to host a regional and possibly a super regional.
College baseball’s tournament format features 64 teams. In that, there are 16 regions, hosted by the top 16 teams in the country. Following that is what is known as a super regional. Super regionals are the final 16 teams who won a regional. If you are a top-eight seed in a regional and you win, you automatically get home field advantage in the super regional.
West Virginia is certainly in super regional territory. The Mountaineers — who are currently 33-11 — are the projected 10-seed in the NCAA Tournament by D1Baseball. In WVU’s region is Virginia, Alabama, and Wright State.
West Virginia would play Wright State in the first game of the regional and the winner of that game would play the winner of Virginia/Alabama.
WVU has hosted a regional twice in school history, with the most recent time coming in 2019. D1Baseball currently projects five of the nine Big 12 teams will make the field of 64.
The Mountianeers are currently ranked 12th in the country, which is the highest mark they have achieved in program history. WVU has won five of their last six games by at least 10 run and host Oklahoma this weekend.
