A flair for the dramatic through his first two MLB games, JJ Wetherholt followed up his big debut by delivering another win for the St. Louis Cardinals.
With the Cardinals trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Wetherholt came up to bat and hit a two-run walk-off single. He went 2-for-5 on the day and is now hitting .333 in nine at-bats on the season.
Wetherholt started off his MLB career by collecting his first hit, run scored and RBI all in one via an Opening Day home run. He now has four RBI with two in each of his first two games.
Thanks in large part to Wetherholt, the Cardinals are 2-0 after two wins over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Based on his success in the minors and standing as a top prospect, Wetherholt is predicted to win the National League Rookie of the Year.
Wetherholt played in both Double-A and Triple-A throughout 2025. Across both levels, Wetherholt hit 28 doubles, 17 home runs, 59 RBI, and stole 23 bases. He was named the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month in July.
Wetherholt made an impact during his three seasons with the Mountaineers from 2022 to 2024. With West Virginia, Wetherholt hit 29 total home runs, 129 RBI, stole 57 bases, and had an overall batting average of .370. He was named the Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Year in 2022.
