After a win earlier in the day, West Virginia Baseball completed the double-header with another victory against Utah. The sweep is WVU’s first in conference play this season.
Grant Hussey started the scoring for the Mountaineers with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. The homer was Hussey’s fourth of the year and evened the score at 1-1.
Armani Guzman scored next in the inning, getting an unearned run off a Utah throwing error from third. Skylar King tacked on two more runs later in the inning with an RBI single into left field, putting WVU up 4-1.
In the third inning, freshman Chase Swain singled into right field, driving in Jace Rinehart for West Virginia’s fifth run of the day. West Virginia led 5-3 after the third inning.
West Virginia extended the lead with a Spencer Barnett single into right field in the fourth, sending Guzman home again. Skylar King’s triple, Rinehart’s double, and Hussey’s single brought in four more runs total, bringing scoring to double digits.
After each team scored a run in the fifth inning, Brodie Kresser continued the scoring party for the Mountaineers in the seventh with an RBI single. WVU took a 12-4 lead with two innings remaining.
Freshman Gavin Kelly had the play of the weekend in the eighth inning. He doubled into center field, but a throwing error into second base allowed Kelly to round third. He beat the throw home to score the Mountaineer’s first inside-the-park home run of the season.
Another run from a Spencer Barnett RBI single ended the game, and the Mountaineers walked out of Kendrick Family Ballpark with a 14-4 victory and the series sweep.
West Virginia will look to continue its hot streak at home on Tuesday against Penn State at 6:30 p.m. ET.
