Hammond Russell IV discusses new techniques and playing against a tempo offense

Under new head coach Rich Rodriguez, opportunities exist to learn new techniques at WVU. Defensive lineman Hammond Russell IV has taken advantage.

“The defense is a little different,” said Russell IV after showing off his new skill set at WVU’s Spring Showcase.

Rich Rodriguez is instilling an attack mentality on defense according to Russell. Under former head coach Neal Brown, there was noticeable hesitation on the defense, something this new approach should change.

“It was more attacking the block so we weren’t reading and reacting.” Russell IV said.

These aggressive techniques should help Russell IV this upcoming season, especially when he has the opportunity to show off his skills against a tempo offense.

“It’s a little different than playing against a slower offense,” said Russell IV.

“You have to get your calls, you have to get aligned, and you have to also still do your job,” Russell IV said. “I feel like it can hurt the offense, and it can also help.”

With the defense being one of the main areas where the Mountaineers struggled last year, Russell IV looks to be a leader and utilize his techniques and experiences to not only help out younger players, but turn the defense into a formidable adversary for any team that faces the Mountaineers in the Fall.
