West Virginia Baseball kept its success going today in a 6-4 win at home against Utah. The victory puts the Mountaineers up 2-0 in the series with another game to go on Saturday. WVU improved to 26-4 on the season.
Utah got the scoring started in the first inning after an RBI single by Tyler Quinn. WVU responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Jace Rinehart, making the score 1-1 going into the second inning.
West Virginia took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning after a three-run home run by Brodie Kresser. This is big for Kresser who began the year red hot but has cooled down as of late. The Mountaineer lineup continues to show their power this season with a combined 33 home runs.
After some good base-running and a fly-out by Matt Flaharty, Utah was only down 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Brodie Kresser continued his great day in that inning with an RBI double down the right-field line; the score was 5-2 WVU going into the fifth.
Cameron Gurney of Utah made it a game in the fifth inning after a two-RBI single. The Utes only found themselves down one run with four innings remaining.
An RBI fly-out by Gavin Kelly in the seventh inning extended the lead for the Mountaineers, and then great pitching by Reese Bassinger shut down the Utes.
Bassinger finished with four innings and two outs pitched with no runs allowed while only giving up three hits. He was the spark WVU needed when it looked like Utah was gaining momentum and was a key piece in the Mountaineers’ 6-4 victory.
WVU will face Utah again today at 4:00 p.m. ET for a chance to sweep the series.
