Tonight, West Virginia took on the Pitt Panthers at Kendrick Family Ballpark seeking their eighth consecutive win in the Backyard Brawl.
Pitt came into the game 16-11 for the season, losing their last two to Boston College.
Freshman Gavin Kelly got the bats going for the Mountaineers with an RBI single scoring Jace Rinehart. Antonio Doganiero struggled on the mound for Pitt, walking in two more. Catcher Logan Sauve kept the inning going with a two-RBI single with the bases loaded.
The Mountaineers got out to a quick 5-0 lead.
Ben Hudson got West Virginia out of bases loaded, nobody out jam, forcing an inning-ending double play to keep Pitt scoreless.
Luke Cantwell got the Panthers on the board with an RBI walk in the top of the fourth.
Rinehart stayed hot at the plate hitting a two RBI ground-rule double in the bottom of the fourth. Kelly followed him up with a two-RBI single, making the score 8-1 after four. Kelly finished the day off 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs
West Virginia’s offense continued with Brodie Kresser scoring on a close play at home. Chase Swain was awarded the RBI.
Grant Hussey showed his power off with a leadoff triple to start the bottom of the seventh for the Mountaineers. Armani Guzman then drove in Hussey with an RBI single. This made it 10-1 Mountaineers.
Hussey finished the game with a sacrifice fly out to centerfield, scoring Ben Lumsden.
The game ended in the bottom of the eighth after the 10-run rule was implemented. The final score was 11-1.
Hudson was awarded the win after striking out four and allowing two hits in his 5.0 innings pitched.
The Mountaineers look forward as they take on the Utah Utes at home on Friday, April 4, for the start of a three-game series.
