WVU’s pitching staff has been an enormous strength for the team through their first 23 games of the year, ranking amongst the best pitching staffs in the country and finding themselves in the top 10 in ERA.
The Mountaineers have found great success so far this season with their pitching, and it has been a massive factor in the team’s red-hot 20-3 start to the season. The Mountaineers rank at No. 8 in the country in ERA with a team ERA of 3.28. They also rank No. 6 in hits allowed per game, in the 200 innings they have surrendered 150 hits for 6.75 hits per game.
The Mountaineers started the season with a weekend rotation consisting of Griffin Kirn, Robby Porco, and Gavin Van Kempen. They have since moved Porco primarily to the bullpen and have filled his spot in the rotation with Carson Estridge and David Hagen. The staff has seven pitchers that boast an ERA sub-three.
In Steve Sabins’ first season as the manager, the team has gotten off to a 20-3 start to the season, the best in program history. The pitching staff has contributed to the red-hot start and hope that they can continue this level of performance once they get deeper in conference play.
