West Virginia baseball on pace for historic season

Now over 20 games into the season, West Virginia baseball sits at 19-2.

Steve Sabins’s Mountaineers started the season off 13-0. This is the best start the Mountaineers have had in a season since 1964 when West Virginia started off 18-0 before losing to Furman.

West Virginia is ranked on every top 25 poll being ranked No. 25 in Baseball America’s rankings, No. 24 in the USA Today coaches’ poll, No. 20 in the NCBWA, and No. 13 Perfect Game’s poll.

Skylar King has led the Mountaineers at the plate with a .439 batting average and .537 on base percentage.

Sam White has also been a contributor to West Virginia’s offense with a .392 batting average, 24 RBIs, and scoring 31 runs for the Mountaineers.

Jace Rinehart has led the Mountaineers in the homerun department having four so far with a .691 slugging percentage.

Griffin Kirn, the senior transfer from Quincy University has been solid on the mound having a 3-0 record and 34 strikeouts in his 29 innings pitched.

Reese Bassinger has had an impressive 1.89 ERA in his 19 innings pitched allowing only 11 hits. Bassinger is a senior transfer from Tarleton State.

With conference play now underway, West Virginia sits fourth in Big 12 rankings with a 2-1 conference record.

After finishing a three-game series on Sunday against conference opponent, Arizona, West Virginia will stay at home to play in-state rival, Marshall for one game.

As the season goes on, the Mountaineers look to keep the momentum going in hopes of reaching the College Baseball World Series in Omaha, Nebraska for the first time in school history.

The Mountaineers are set to face off against Arizona, Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET in Morgantown.
