After being snubbed from the NCAA tournament, West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries left the Mountaineers to become the next head coach of Indiana.
West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker has a lot of work to do in the Mountaineers’ next coaching search. With a basketball background and multiple great hires since coming to WVU, there is not too much to worry about if you’re a Mountaineer fan.
“We have an outstanding tradition with some of the most loyal and passionate fans in college basketball. We have tremendously generous supporters and a great partnership with the university that allows us to compete in this new era of college athletics,” Baker said.
With no other professional teams in the state, all the money gets thrown into WVU. It allows for good NIL and a lot of support at games and events. Wren Baker believes there will not be an issue for WVU moving forward.
Last year, the coaching search did not take very long. Wren had his eyes on Darian DeVries and gave him an offer he could not say no to at the time. NIL and contract money at these big schools are more than it has ever been, and Wren Baker has learned from this experience that WVU will need to pay a lot of money for their coach of the future.
With a lot of the key coaches still in the NCAA tournament, Mountaineer fans will need to wait to see who their next head coach will be. They will need to put their trust in Wren Baker to make the right hire like he did last season with Darian DeVries.
