A year in review: Darian DeVries and his short tenure with the Mountaineers

After just one year with the Mountaineers, head coach Darian DeVries decided to break his five-year contract to move on after accepting the head coaching position with Indiana. While DeVries spent a short amount of time in West Virginia, he led the Mountaineers to a winning record with a brand new roster.

The Mountaineers finished with an overall record of 19-13 (10-10 in Big 12). DeVries brought ten more wins to West Virginia than interim head coach Josh Eilert did the previous season. Eilert finished the 2023-2024 season with an overall record of 9-23 (4-14 in Big 12).

DeVries earned coaching honors such as the NABC East District Co-Coach of the Year alongside Maryland’s Kevin Willard. In January, DeVries was the recipient of the Jim Phelan award ‘Mid-Season’ honors. This award is presented to the top head coach in Division I basketball.

DeVries coached Javon Small to a successful senior year filled with many awards, honors, and career bests. Small most recently was named an AP All-American Honorable Mention.

Besides just leading the Mountaineers to a successful year on the court, DeVries had an impressive recruiting class entering for the 2025-2026 season. Four-star recruits Trent MacLean and Kelvin Odih reopened their recruitment following DeVries’ departure leaving Braydon Hawthorne as the last remaining signee in the Mountaineers’ recruiting 2025 class.

This leaves West Virginia and athletic director Wren Baker on the hunt for a second head coach in three years.
