West Virginia’s exclusion from the NCAA Tournament was just the start of bad news for Mountaineer fans this week.
First-year WVU head coach Darian DeVries will take the same position at Indiana for the 2025-2026 season, The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman announced Tuesday. DeVries will be taking the reigns from Mike Woodson, who Indiana revealed would step down in February after four seasons with the Hoosiers.
DeVries coached his final game with WVU at the Big 12 Championship on March 12, falling to Colorado, the conference’s lowest seed, 67-60. The shocking loss preceded the Mountaineers’ exclusion from March Madness.
DeVries issued a statement to WVU fans following the Selection Sunday results, claiming that his Mountaineers had a resume worthy of advancing in the postseason. He added that he was proud of his team’s season and thankful for continued fan support.
“I would like to thank all of Mountaineer Nation for their unwavering support of our team this season,” DeVries said.
The 2025-2026 season will now be WVU’s third consecutive year with a new coach at the helm, after interim head coach Josh Eilert in 2023-2024 and DeVries in 2024-2025. Eilert’s Mountaineers went 9-23 overall and 4-14 in the Big 12, a mark DeVries improved to 19-13 overall and 10-10 in the conference.
