Big 12 Men’s Teams in March Madness

Selection Sunday featured seven Big 12 teams that received bids to the tournament, here’s how the bracket developed.

Houston was selected as one of the four one-seeds in the tournament. Being chosen as the No. 1 seed in the Midwest region, this is the fifth consecutive that Houston has received a No. 1 seed and the 17th time in the last 28 years. Houston is set for a matchup with No. 16 SIU Edwardsville on Thursday.

Iowa State was revealed as the No. 3 seed in the South region. The Cyclones finished the 2025 season with a 24-9 record and 13-7 in conference play. They will have a matchup with No. 14 Lipscomb on Thursday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Texas Tech was also named as a No. 3 seed in the West region. Texas Tech is an incredibly tough team that relies heavily on its defense. They will have a matchup on Thursday with No. 14 UNC Wilmington in Wichita, Kansas.

Arizona was selected as a No. 4 seed in the East region and will travel back out west for a match with No. 13 Akron. The Wildcats have had their name called on each of the last four selection Sundays.

BYU was given a No. 6 seed, giving them their second consecutive bid in their first two seasons as members of the Big 12. They will kick off the tournament with a match against No. 11 VCU in Denver, Colorado, on Thursday.

Kansas was given a No. 7 seed in the West region. Under coach Bill Self, the Jayhawks have heard their name called on Selection Sunday each of the previous 33 years. They will match up with No. 10 Arkansas on Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island.

Baylor was the final team given the nod for the Big 12, receiving a No. 9 seed. The Bears will play No. 8 Mississippi State in Raleigh, North Carolina in their first-round matchup.

The Big 12 ranked as the third-highest conference in terms of the number of teams they sent to the Big Dance. With seven teams making the tournament, the only two conferences with more teams representing in the tournament are the SEC, which saw 14 of their 16 teams receive a tournament bid, and the Big 10 is going to send eight.
