McCabe Becomes First 3,000 Meter Indoor National Champion in Program History

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (March 15, 2025) – Graduate student Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team claimed first place in the women’s 3,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon inside of the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

McCabe posted a time of 9:01.18, shattering the facilities record. With the time, McCabe earned first team All-America honors. This marks her tenth All-America accolade across her collegiate cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field careers.

Additionally, the graduate student became the first Mountaineer in program history to win the 3,000 meters at an indoor or outdoor championship. McCabe is just the second student athlete in program history to win an indoor title, joining alumna Kate Vermeulen who took home the mile win in 1999.

“We have had a lot of special athletes come through this program,” said WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Each and every one of them has played a role in what we were able to experience today. For those who have never met Ceili, that is unfortunate as she is someone who everybody should want to represent this program, university and state. To watch her join some of the past greats of this program is a moment that I will never forget.”

Next, the Mountaineers begin the 2025 outdoor season on March 21-22 by sending split squads to the USF Alumni Invitational in Tampa, Florida and hosting the Marty Pushkin Invitational in Morgantown, West Virginia.
