WVU baseball bounces back; wins 14th game of the season

After West Virginia baseball suffered their first loss of the season yesterday against Kennesaw State, they responded strongly in front of a home crowd today. They defeated the Owls by a score of 14-7 to move to 14-1 on the season.

Kennesaw State got the scoring started in the first inning with RBI singles by both Chris Cole and Cooper Williams. They found themselves up 3-0 going into the bottom of the inning.

Sam White responded quickly for WVU with a three-run home run to tie the game at three. Then a Gavin Kelly RBI triple made the score 4-3 Mountaineers going into the second inning.

A Chase Swain flyout and a West Virginia run in the bottom of the third inning made the score 5-3 Mountaineers.

After a Kennesaw State run in the top of the fifth inning, West Virginia got their bats clicking. Grant Hussey doubled into right field to bring in two runs. Brodie Kresser singled into center field to bring in another, and then in the same inning, an RBI double by Logan Sauve improved the Mountaineer’s lead to 9-4.

WVU was able to hit the dagger in the eighth inning behind the bat of Brodie Kresser, who has been on fire this entire season. After a run earlier in the inning for WVU, Kresser launched a ball into left field to make it a 14-5 game going into the ninth inning.

Kennesaw State scored two runs in the ninth, but it was not enough, and the Mountaineers took the series with a 14-7 win.

The story of the day and the entire season for West Virginia has been Brodie Kresser. He finished the day 3-5 with a .412 batting average and four RBIs. With the pitching of WVU struggling in the last few games, the Mountaineers have needed these big nights from Kresser and other guys.

The Mountaineers will have one day off before their matchup at home on Tuesday against Towson. The first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
