After beginning the year 13-0, West Virginia baseball lost their first game at the hands of Kennesaw State earlier today. After a back-and-forth game, the Owls defeat the Mountaineers by a score of 13-9.
Donovan Cash opened things up for Kennesaw State with a two-run double to give them a 2-0 lead. Logan Sauve immediately answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1 Kennesaw State.
Kennesaw State responded in the third inning with great base running and a double by Cam Suto to take a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the inning.
West Virginia found their stride in the bottom of that inning, scoring five runs after a few walks and key hits by Sam White and Jace Rinehart. They found themselves leading 6-4 heading into the fourth inning.
Kennesaw State scored two runs in that fourth inning to tie the game at six. Another run for West Virginia in the fifth inning by Sam White put the Mountaineers up by one.
WVU added to their lead in the seventh inning with a few walks and a fly-out by Sam White. The score was 9-7 heading into the eighth inning.
After a scoreless eighth inning for both teams, the Owls found themselves at bat in the top of the ninth with the game on the line. Back-to-back home runs by Donovan Cash and Cam Suto scored five runs for Kennesaw State, giving them a 13-9 lead.
The Mountaineers could not respond and lost their first game of the season. They will face the Owls again tomorrow at noon ET.
