In 2012, West Virginia University made the switch to the Big 12 Conference, leaving the Big East after 33 years. Since then, WVU women’s basketball has steadily been one of the better teams in the conference and has performed well in the Big 12 tournament.
The Mountaineers have been to three Big 12 tournament championships. In 2017 they won their first Big 12 tournament championship after defeating Baylor by a score of 77-66. West Virginia’s two championship losses have also been against Baylor in both 2014 and 2021.
WVU has been in 11 Big 12 tournaments with an overall record of 12-10. That .545 winning percentage is one of the best out of the current Big 12 teams, behind both Baylor and Iowa State.
With a new-look Big 12 this season, the Mountaineers have a chance to do something special behind head coach Mark Kellogg and senior standout JJ Quinerly. The Mountaineers’ defense and shooting ability have them built to make a postseason run.
After receiving the fourth seed after the regular season, WVU will await the winner of Kansas State and UCF later today. Their first game will tip off on March 7 at noon ET.
