West Virginia women’s basketball has just completed the regular season with a 23-5 record (12-5 in conference play) and went 16-0 at home.
This was not the only story from the Mountaineers this season; JJ Quinerly is having yet another incredible year and is a finalist for the Big 12 Player of the Year.
Quinerly averages 20.7 points and 3.1 steals per game while shooting 44.8 percent from the field. She is averaging the most she has in her four-year WVU career while having a much bigger impact on winning. She is also coming off her career-high and school-record 38 points in their win over Utah.
Head coach Mark Kellogg believes Quinerly is having a bigger effect on the game this year than in the past, and it has shown as the Mountaineers are entering the Big 12 tournament with a four seed and two byes.
Since joining the program two seasons ago, Kellogg has found a way to unlock Quinerly’s potential. In her freshman and sophomore seasons with WVU, Quinerly averaged less than 15 points per game while shooting less than 70 percent from the line and not being the best defender due to her size.
These are the parts of Quinerly’s game that have improved and allowed the Mountaineers to win so many games this season. It is also the reason she is getting so much national attention so far this season. She has become one of the best scorers and on-ball defenders in the entire country.
JJ Quinerly has become one of the best women’s basketball players to ever play in a West Virginia uniform. She has 1,937 total points and, more impressively, 318 steals in her illustrious career.
West Virginia will look to rally behind Quinerly and make a run in the Big 12 and NCAA tournament. The first game of postseason play will be on March 7 at 11:00 a.m. ET.
