West Virginia baseball is creating something special in Morgantown. They defeated Queens earlier today to improve to 11-0 on the season. It is now the second-best start in program history.
Queens got the scoring started in the second inning with a solo home run by Caleb Stewart. A slow start at the plate and good pitching by junior Adrian Quezada kept the score 1-0 Queens until early in the fifth inning.
Grant Hussey answered the call for WVU in that fifth inning with a solo home run into center field. A Sam White RBI single later in the inning made the score 2-1 in favor of the Mountaineers.
A fielding error by Queens in the seventh allowed Grant Hussey to score, making the score 3-1 WVU. Later in the inning, Jace Rinehart hit a double with the bases loaded to bring in three more runs for the Mountaineers. A fly-out by Gavin Kelly allowed Rinehart to score, making the score 7-1 West Virginia.
Brodie Kresser continued his amazing weekend with a solo home run in the eighth inning, increasing the lead to 8-1. He finished the day 2 for 5 with a .409 batting average.
Then in the ninth inning, poor pitching by Queens walked four batters for the Mountaineers. This brought in another run and made the bases loaded for red-hot Grant Hussey, who took care of business with an RBI single to drive in two more runs. WVU finished with an 11-1 victory.
The story of the day for the Mountaineers was the pitching staff. Starter Gavin Van Kempen got things started for WVU, pitching 5 innings with only two hits and one run allowed. The bullpen came in and finished the job, only allowing one hit in four innings.
Head Coach Steve Sabins was able to play a lot of young guys today in the win, giving them experience and this team more depth as we get closer to conference play.
The Mountaineers will face Queens in the final game of the four-game set tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. ET.
