West Virginia baseball continues to make history under first-year head coach Steve Sabins. After a slow start, they found their stride and defeated Queens by a score of 7-1.
This win extends Steve Sabins’ record of most wins in a row by a first-year head coach to start a season. The pitching has been great, and every batter has contributed to the 9-0 start to the season.
The star of the game for the Mountaineers was Division II transfer Griffin Kirn. Kirn pitched 8.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and only five hits allowed. After giving up a run in the first inning to go down 1-0, Kirn and the West Virginia defense showed their potential for this season and did not allow another.
Skylar King got the scoring started for the Mountaineers in the fifth inning after a fly-out by Armani Guzman. A double by Brodie Kresser made it 2-1 with WVU taking the lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
Another RBI double in the seventh inning by Brodie Kresser made it 3-1 WVU. Kresser finished 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs in the game at the lead-off spot for the Mountaineers.
The scoring continued for West Virginia in the seventh inning after an RBI double for Logan Sauve made it 4-1 WVU. Grant Hussey tacked on another with a single into right field to make it 5-1 in the eighth inning.
Closing pitcher, freshman Benjamin Hudson, helped finish the game with a 7-1 victory.
The Mountaineers will look to continue their success today as they face Queens in the second game of their four-game set. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET on ESPN +.
