In Thursday’s media session after the team’s second spring practice, head coach Rich Rodriguez gave an update on how the quarterback room has looked through the spring so far.
Rich Rodriguez is known for his high-tempo, fast-paced offensive scheme that so heavily relies on quarterback play. WVU has a full quarterback room going into 2025, headlined by returning junior Nicco Marchiol, a senior transfer from Texas A&M Jaylen Henderson, and redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins, plus some other players from the portal and freshman class.
“Some coaches say if you have two, you have none; if you have three, you have none. I don’t believe that I say if you’re good enough to win, just play with them, that’s for any position including quarterback,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez has had some experience in his career, rotating multiple quarterbacks from his time at Ole Miss. He mentioned John Rhys Plumlee and Matt Corral, who rotated at the quarterback position. It will be interesting to see if Rodriguez can or is willing to implement a similar structure to get the best out of multiple quarterbacks on the roster.
“The progress of the quarterbacks has been good to see; we have three quarterbacks who have started division one football games, and then we have a couple of talented freshmen. I think that room has shown some really good progress,” Rodriguez said.
Rich Rodriguez also credited the quarterback room on the hard work they have put in and how pleased he is with the way they have competed.
“I think the mentality we have in that room, there are some really competitive guys, and they’re going to want to show that they can do both in practice and in the game,” Rodriguez said.
