WVU alumni team set to play host to TBT in Charleston

Summer’s one million dollar, bracket style basketball tournament is returning to Almost Heaven this year.

Best Virginia, WVU’s alumni-based men’s basketball squad, is set to host The Basketball Tournament’s 12th annual competition. The former Mountaineers will host the West Virginia Regional, where eight of TBT’s 64 teams will compete in a bracket to advance to the quarterfinal round.

For the first time in TBT history, that quarterfinal round may take place in Charleston as well. Regional hosts that advance to the quarterfinal round will take home court advantage against teams that did not host the opening rounds. If two regional hosts are set to play, the game location will be determined by which host sells 4,000 tickets the fastest.

2025 will mark the third year that Charleston has hosted a TBT regional, having hosted in 2021 and 2022. All games in the West Virginia Regional will be played at the Charleston Coliseum.

“Charleston has been an amazing host for TBT,” said TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “The West Virginia fan base has always been extraordinary and now it has the opportunity to host games all the way through the championship. We can’t wait to return this summer.”

Best Virginia will be hosting a regional for its fourth time, as the squad represented WVU in Wheeling, West Virginia in 2023. The team most recently played in Pittsburgh, where Panther alumni team Zoo Crew hosted a regional last year.

Competition at the West Virginia Regional kicks off on July 18 and will end with a championship game on July 23. Best Virginia’s roster will be announced throughout the spring through its social media account, @finalfourcast on X.
