Steve Sabins is 6-0 as the head coach of WVU Baseball.
The 10-year veteran of the Mountaineer program finished off his second double-header of the 2025 season on Sunday, picking up two wins over Lipscomb. After a close call on Saturday and a shut-out on Sunday afternoon, WVU won another Sunday night, 4-2. WVU concludes its time in Nashville on Monday for the final game of the series.
Sophomore left fielder Michael Perazza set the tone early in the win, hitting a home run in the very first inning to capitalize on the momentum of the afternoon win.
The homer was Perazza’s only hit on the day in four at-bats. No Mountaineer tallied more than one hit.
Lipscomb evened out West Virginia’s momentum in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring once in each to tie the game at two. Armani Guzman broke the tie in the seventh, scoring an unearned run on a passed ball.
Short stop Brodie Kresser capped off the win with an RBI single for freshman catcher Gavin Kelly in the eighth.
Junior Carson Estridge pitched the win for WVU on Sunday night, closing from the last two outs of the fifth inning through the end of the ninth. Estridge pitched five strikeouts, four hits, and a walk.
Junior Gavin Van Kempen started, throwing three strikeouts and allowing two hits, two walks, and both of Lipscomb’s runs. The game was WVU’s first to feature just two Mountaineer pitchers.
Sabins takes over as head coach this season after three seasons as the associate head coach under Randy Mazey. He is all but entirely responsible for the Mountaineer roster, having served as WVU’s recruiting coordinator for six years through 2023 before directly training for his new position.
With a victory on Monday, Sabins would return home undefeated for the Mountaineers’ home opener against Ohio on Wednesday.
WVU’s series finale against Lipscomb is set for noon on Monday in Nashville.
