Mountaineers shut out Lipscomb to start double-header

A close call on Saturday simply put eyes on a blowout to start Sunday, as West Virginia took care of Lipscomb 5-0.

The shutout was West Virginia’s first of two games in Nashville on Sunday, with the second one starting at 4:30 p.m. With the win, WVU is now up 2-0 in the three-game series against the Bisons.

West Virginia was silent offensively until the fifth inning, where juniors Chase Swain and Kyle West hit a pair of home runs to earn three runs total. Swain hit first in the inning, and West sent himself and Sam White home with two outs.

Logan Sauve and Armani Guzman scored WVU’s final runs, both doing so in the seventh inning. Sauve opened the inning with a triple on Cameron Guise’s first pitch of the day, and White grounded out to second to bring him in.

Guzman scored as a pinch runner for Alex Marot, who hit a single. Kyle West advanced Guzman with a single before the runner moved to third on a throwing error from Lipscomb.

On the mound, junior Robby Porco and sophomore Chase Meyer each pitched three full innings for a combined seven. Each pitched one hit and five strikeouts. Porco walked five batters, and Meyer walked two. Meyer was credited with the win.

Sophomores Joseph Fredericks and Bryson Hoff split the eighth inning after Meyer allowed a hit and a walk in his first two batters. Fredericks faced one batter, leading to a double play. Hoff’s first batter walked, and his second grounded out.

Freshman Bryant Yoak pitched the entire ninth inning, throwing two strikeouts and a ground-out and hitting one batter. Gavin Van Kempen will start at the mound for the second game of the double-header.
