West Virginia brought in a solid transfer class following the 2024 season, let’s take a look at some newcomers to the team that could make an impact in 2025.
Reese Bassinger
Bassinger is a senior relief pitcher who is playing his first season with WVU after transferring from Tarleton State, a smaller division one school in Texas. Last season at Tarleton State, Bassinger appeared in 27 games, making only one start and striking out 57 hitters in 67.2 innings of work. Bassinger was named to the WAC All-Tournament team in 2024. In the opening series against Jacksonville, he saw some work coming out of the bullpen, in which he pitched 3.1 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four while picking up the save in two of WVU’s first three wins.
Alex Marot
Marot is a redshirt freshman who missed the entirety of his freshman season due to injury. He was a highly-touted player coming out of high school, where he was ranked as the top third baseman as well as the top-ranked player in Rhode Island, earning two First-Team All NEPSAC nods. In the opening series against Jacksonville, Marot saw five at-bats, in which he recorded two hits, one being a double, and also drove in a run. Marot could find himself playing a huge role for this team as the season goes on due to his bat and ability to play multiple positions on the field.
Chase Swain
Swain is a redshirt junior shortstop who transferred to WVU from Manhattan College. Last season at Manhattan, Swain hit .392 with five home runs and driving in 41 runs while starting in 39 of the team’s 40 games, earning him First-Team All-MAC honors. In the opening series, Swain got two at-bats and went hitless while getting caught stealing once. Swain could play a role for the Mountaineers as being a versatile middle infield option and pinch runner off the bench as the season goes on.
Griffin Kirn
Kirn, a redshirt senior transfer from Quincy University. In 2024, Kirn posted an 8-1 record with a 2.96 ERA while also punching out 100 hitters. He earned GLVC Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Conference, and has added three First-Team All Regions over his time at Quincy. Kirn got the ball on opening day in 2025 and posted 5.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out five. Kirn is looking to be one of the top arms in the Mountaineers starting rotation and play a big role in the teams success once conference play starts.
