No. 18 West Virginia women’s basketball team fell to No. 25 Baylor in their road matchup Tuesday evening after struggling to find the net.
The Mountaineers got on the board first with a quick field goal by Sydney Shaw within the first minute of the matchup, but the Lady Bears quickly responded. A back and forth first quarter led to exciting play but left West Virginia down by just three following the first ten minutes. The Mountaineers went 7-16 from the field and 1-5 behind the arc.
During the second quarter, West Virginia was unable to bounce back while the Lady Bears improved their lead to 10 heading into the half. The Mountaineers struggled even more, shooting just 29.4% from the field and making zero of their five three-point attempts.
Following the half, Baylor went up by 16 late in the third quarter. While three three-pointers in a row helped the Mountaineers close the gap to seven points, it still wasn’t enough to keep their momentum going. The Lady Bears led by nine or more for the rest of the game.
West Virginia led in the first three minutes of the game, but was not able to get back on top for the remainder of the matchup. They struggled offensively shooting 37% from the field and 24% behind the arc compared to Baylor’s 50% in both categories.
Jordan Harrison led the Mountaineers with 20 points.
West Virginia now holds an overall record of 19-5 (9-4 in Big 12). They return home Saturday to take on Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m. EST.
