No. 20 West Virginia Defeats Utah Valley to Earn Important Big 12 Road Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 6, 2025) – The No. 20 West Virginia University wrestling team snapped a three-match losing streak with a dominant performance against Utah Valley, 26-12, on Thursday night in Layton, Utah.

West Virginia (9-6, 3-5 Big 12) earned its first Big 12 win since it defeated then-No. 20 Oklahoma on Jan. 17.

Redshirt sophomore No. 26 Brody Conley earned a hard-fought win against Utah Valley’s Mark Takara to begin the night. Conley won by decision, 6-3, to put the Mountaineers on the board first.

In the 184-pound match, redshirt senior No. 19 Dennis Robin lost by decision to Caleb Uhlenhopp in overtime.

Three straight wins by the Mountaineers put them in front by 10 heading into the 133-pound match. However, fifth-year Tommy Maddox was pinned by Kase Mauger in the 133-pound match to cut West Virginia’s lead to four.

Redshirt junior Jordan Titus put on a dominant performance against Patrick Mullen, winning technical fall, 21-5. Fifth-year Sam Hillegas locked up the win for WVU with a technical fall over Smokey McClure, 18-3.

Fifth-year Caleb Dowling earned his fourth win of the season as he defeated Tanner Frothinger by decision, 15-9.

In the final match of the night, fifth-year No. 3 Peyton Hall lost by decision to No. 4 Terrell Barraclough, 5-2. The loss marked Hall’s first of the season.
