No. 18 WVU picked up a huge win over Kansas in blowout fashion, their defense was the story of the night.
Syndey Shaw got the Mountaineers started early with a corner three to start the scoring for the game en route to a 13-point first quarter for Shaw. The Mountaineer defense was relentless in the first quarter, forcing 13 turnovers and not allowing Kansas to score its first points for most of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers’ defense continued to fluster Kansas, forcing another six turnovers. West Virginia went into the half with a 32-18 lead, led by Sydney Shaw and Jordan Harrison, who both had double-digit points at the break.
Coming out of the half in the third quarter, the Mountaineers once again forced five turnovers in the third quarter and were able to continue to tack onto their lead. The Mountaineers ended up winning the game by a score of 74-43 and forced 28 turnovers in the game.
Sydney Shaw set a new career high in points with 22, surpassing her previous high of 20, which she has reached twice this season. JJ Quinerly, despite the rough start in the first quarter, was able to walk away with 16 points of her own, and Jordan Harrison had 15.
The Mountaineers improve their season record to 18-4 and will travel to take on Houston on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 3:00 pm EST. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
