What Tucker DeVries’ absence has meant to WVU

The West Virginia Mountaineers have been without their second-leading scorer Tucker DeVries since their matchup against Georgetown on Dec. 6.

DeVries averaged 14.6 points per game shooting 41.2% from the field in the eight games he played this season.

Without Tucker, the Mountaineers went on a 5-game win streak, including defeating No.7 Kansas in Lawrence. Since then, the team has gone 2-4, including losses to unranked Arizona, Arizona State, and Kansas State. What has Tucker DeVries’ absence really meant to the Mountaineers?

Before his injury, WVU averaged 81.9 points per game while shooting 44% from the field. They defeated No. 3 Gonzaga and No. 24 Arizona on a neutral court during the Battle 4 Atlantis holiday tournament.

Since then, the team has scored an average of 66.4 points per game, shooting only 40% from the field. The difference has been the loss of his all-around scoring. He made the opponent worry about more than Javon Small, adding a different component to the WVU offense.

Tucker DeVries’ injury has meant so much to the Mountaineers, especially on the offensive end. The team is still exceeding expectations at this point in the season, but it makes you wonder what the capability of this team could be.
