West Virginia Falls on the Road to Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (Jan. 25, 2025) – The No. 16-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team closed out their road swing with a 77-62 loss to Arizona on Saturday evening inside the McKale Center in Tucson.

The loss snaps a three-game conference win streak as WVU falls to 6-3 against Big 12 foes. WVU is now 3-3 on the road this season.

The Mountaineers found themselves battling from behind all night, eventually trailing the Wildcats 46-30 at halftime. WVU was outscored 29-15 in the second quarter, a mark the Mountaineers were never able to make up. West Virginia trimmed their deficit to as few as seven points in the early stages of the fourth but never got any closer to taking the lead.

Senior guard JJ Quinerly finished with a game-high 26 points to reach the 20-point threshold for the eighth time this season. Junior guard Sydney Shaw was the only other Mountaineer in double-figures with 10 points. Senior guard Kyah Watson led WVU with six rebounds and added four steals.

The Mountaineers are now 0-3 all-time in the series against the Wildcats.

Quinerly’s 26 points in the game has her at No. 8 on the all-time scoring list with 1,732, and behind Hall of Famer Kate Bulger (2001-04) with 1,733. She is 4th in steals with 291 and sits just two away from catching Hall of Famer Rosemary Kosiorek (1989-92) who has 293.

West Virginia now returns home where they welcome Oklahoma State on Saturday inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. Tipoff is scheduled for Noon ET and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
