No. 23-ranked West Virginia will host Arizona State on Tuesday following a big weekend for the program.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers upset formerly No. 2-ranked Iowa State, helping them regain their spot in the AP Poll. WVU has three wins against top-10 opponents this season and a 4-1 record overall against ranked opponents. In his first year, head coach Darian DeVries has completely tuned around the program with a rebuilt roster in such a short time frame.
The Mountaineers still have a long way to go in the regular season before the Big 12 tournament and potentially an NCAA Tournament Appearance. Let’s take a look at West Virginia’s BPI (Basketball Power Index) to see where they rank nationally and among Big 12 teams. The BPI, created by ESPN, is a way to measure a team’s true strength using both offensive and defensive strength ratings. It also makes predictions on how a team will perform in the future.
Currently, West Virginia ranks No. 41 nationally with a BPI of 12, 4.0 offensive and 8.1 defensive. Their national ranking ranks them No. 9 in the Big 12, according to the BPI.
The BPI’s projections give them a projected overall win-loss record of 19.8-11.2, 10.8-9.2 in conference play. They have under a 0.1% chance of winning the Big 12 according to the BPI’s current metrics.
