On Saturday, 1999 Heisman finalist and four-time NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick named former West Virginia linebacker/safety Terence Garvin as his defensive coordinator at FCS Norfolk State, an HBCU.
Vikc first took the job as head coach of Norfolk State back in December and recently started building his coaching staff. The former No. 1 overall pick grew up in Newport News, Virginia and attended Virginia Tech.
A native of Baltimore, Garvin began his career as a SPUR safety at WVU in 2009, before moving to linebacker ahead of his senior season in 2012. In his career with the Mountaineers, Garvin had 235 total tackles (134 solo), 23 tackles-for-loss, 10.5 sacks, seven passes defended, three forced fumbles and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Following his college career, Garvin was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013. He spent three years with the Steelers from 2013-2015, signed with Washington in 2016, the Seattle Seahawks in 2017 and San Francisco 49ers in 2018. Garvin then went on to play a year in the Alliance of American Football in 2019 and a year in the XFL in 2020 before retiring.
Garvin landed his first coaching job at Florida Memorial, an HBCU and NAIA school, as a linebackers coach, defensive run game coordinator and assistant special teams coordinator in 2022. He was then promoted to co-defensive coordinator ahead of the 2023 season.
Now, Garvin will serve as Vick’s defensive coordinator at Norfolk State, who finished 4-8 in 2024.
