Darian DeVries has found early success in his first year as West Virginia men’s basketball head coach.
The Mountaineers have picked up three wins against opponents who were ranked. Recently, they upset No. 7 Kansas, picking up the program’s first-ever win in Allen Fieldhouse.
Just three games into conference play, the Mountaineers still have a long way to go before moving into the Big 12 tournament and potentially making the NCAA Tournament.
ESPN’s Basketball Power Index (BPI) measures a team’s true strength, both offensive and defensively. It also makes predictions about how a team will perform.
The BPI has WVU ranked No. 43 in the country, which ranks them ninth in the Big 12. Teams that the Mountaineers have defeated, Arizona (8), Gonzaga (10) and Kansas (6), have a higher BPI.
West Virginia’s total BPI is 11.6, 3.4 offense and 8.2 defense. They are projected to have an overall record of 18.6-12.4 and a conference record of 9.9-10.1. They’re given less than a 0.1% chance to win the Big 12 Championship.
