West Virginia point guard Javon Small has been named “Player of the Week” by well-known college basketball analyst Andy Katz.
Small, an Oklahoma State transfer, has been a standout for the Mountaineers through the first 13 games of the season. He leads the team in scoring, assists and steals, while ranking second in rebounding — an impressive feat for a guard.
The junior has been highly efficient shooting from all areas of the court and has helped WVU to one of its best starts in years. The Mountaineers currently sit at 11-2, with several notable wins under their belt.
This past week, Small was pivotal in West Virginia’s historic road victory against Kansas. Playing at Allen Fieldhouse to open Big 12 play, Small recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. His clutch free throws in the closing seconds sealed WVU’s first-ever road win against the Jayhawks.
The Mountaineers then returned to the WVU Coliseum to host Oklahoma State, where they cruised to another victory. Small once again led the way, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Small’s contributions have been critical to the team’s early-season success, particularly with two starters — Tucker DeVries and Amani Hansberry — sidelined due to injuries. He has embraced the leadership role and will aim to continue his strong play when the Mountaineers host Arizona tomorrow night. WVU already defeated Arizona earlier this season during the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas.
