West Virginia jumps in NET rankings after upset

After nearly grabbing a spot on the AP top 25 poll this week, WVU Men’s Basketball is on the rise in the Division I NET rankings as well.

West Virginia took home its third Quadrant 1 win of the season on Tuesday, defeating the No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks in the Allen Fieldhouse. Consequentially, the Mountaineers jumped six spots, up to 29th, in the men’s basketball NET rankings.

Quadrant 1 victories, depicted as the most challenging to gain in college basketball, vary in the level of competition based primarily on game site location.

With West Virginia playing away this week, the Mountaineers would have earned a Quadrant 1 victory if their opponents were in the top 75 of the NET rankings. Kansas would have had to defeat a top 30 team, which the Mountaineers were not, to do the same.

Because Quadrant status of wins and losses fluctuate with the NET rankings, Kansas is currently charged with a Quadrant 1 loss to WVU for a record of 2-3. The Jayhawks are undefeated against other quadrants.

The Mountaineers are now 3-1 in Quadrant 1 games on the season, with its only other loss being a Quadrant 2 loss to Louisville.

As of now, Kansas still ranks above WVU in the NET rankings, at 20th overall after dropping from 15th.
