No. 18 West Virginia secures first conference win

The West Virginia women’s basketball team collected their first conference win over UCF with a gaping score of 80-59. The Mountaineers fell to Colorado during their first matchup of Big 12 play. 

The points came easy for West Virginia, putting up 32 in the first quarter and only allowing 10 from UCF. Senior guard JJ Quinerly broke the program record for most points in a single quarter docking in at 17. The Mountaineers ended the half with 18 rebounds, 7 turnovers, and a score of 50-16.

The Knights headed into the second half with more energy, tripling their first-half total, but the Mountaineers managed to keep a steady lead of over 20. West Virginia totaled 22 rebounds but their turnovers spiked at 16 during the last 20 minutes. 

Quinerly hit a season high with 31 points while Shaw put up 19 points, 15 of them being from three-pointers. 

West Virginia now holds a record of 11-2 (1-1 in Big 12) with eight consecutive wins at home. The Mountaineers will face BYU at home this Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
