With all the new coaching changes for the Mountaineers, Rich Rodriguez has chosen to keep offensive coordinator/running backs coach Chad Scott on his staff.
Scott started his career with the Mountaineers in 2019, along with head coach Neal Brown. During 2019-2021, he was a co-offensive coordinator, and then he served as the run game coordinator from 2022-2023 before making his final change to offensive coordinator in 2024.
Scott took over the team as the interim head coach after WVU fired Neal Brown. Scott had one game for the Mountaineers as the head coach and it was the Frisco Bowl against Memphis.
Many people argue that the offense looked better in that game than any other game throughout the season. The offense recorded a season-high 534 total yards, and Quarterback Garrett Greene had a season-high 328 passing yards. As a whole the Mountaineers offense looked more explosive in the one game with Scott than any other point in the season.
Rodriguez has opted to keep Scott on his coaching staff; this is an important move for the new coaching staff because Scott has a major impact on recruiting running backs. Scott’s return may also factor in some player’s decision not to enter the transfer portal.
WVU now has now decided on an offensive coordinator which is massive for the movement of the off-season because it’s a major position. It is also not known what role Scott will take on.
