Chad Scott, Garrett Greene, and Sean Martin preview Frisco Bowl amid WVU coaching change

With just over 24 hours before WVU is set to play in their selected bowl game this season, many fans have seemingly almost forgot the team is playing. Not only is the bowl game an early one and one of the first of the season, but WVU is currently going through a coaching change.

The news of Rich Rodriguez returning to coach the Mountaineers has certainly taken a majority of the fans’ focus in the last several days.

Sean Martin and Garrett Greene joined Interim Head Coach Chad Scott for media availability leading up to the matchup against Memphis in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl to be played in Frisco, Texas.

Coach Scott started the presser off in his opening statements thanks Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl for choosing WVU and how the team is looking forward to their matchup with Memphis, iIt’s been a great week of prep both at home and here. It’s been a great experience for our players. We’ve done a phenomenal job getting work in.”

Scott then added, “We’ve also had some great activities that the the bowl has had. So thankful for that and grateful for that, and appreciate the opportunity to be here and compete against a great football team in Memphis.”

It was asked of Greene about the Memphis defense coming into the game and some of the challenges he thinks could be presented to him and the WVU offense.

“Thankfully for us we’ve played three other kind of 3-5 defenses this year. So there’s some simulators with that but I think the thing that they do best is they play really really hard. I think top to bottom if you look at D-line all the way up to the safeties, they fly around and they play really hard.”

For both Greene and Martin, this will be the last game the two ever play in a WVU jersey after a couple seasons of starting roles on the team. Both are expected to play a majority of the game along with the rest of this year’s starters.

Greene’s question was followed up by practically the same question for the other side of the field for both Scott and Martin, who were asked about what makes Memphis’s offense dangerous.

“They’re very similar to us in a sense where they run spread offense and a lot of misdirection and they got a bunch of explosive athletes at receiver, got a great running back, and great quarterback. And similar, we got the same thing offensively,” Scott said. “So for us, we’ve been doing a lot of good on good where we get our defense going against our first team offense. And so with that preparation and the work going against one another, it gives us a good chance to go be successful tomorrow.”

Martin added to Scott’s response, saying, “I feel like they really like running the ball. I feel like we’re very good at stopping the run. Just got to focus on getting off the field on third downs.”

The kickoff for the bowl game is set for 9:00 p.m. ET and can be viewed on ESPN.
