In the introduction of new West Virginia football head coach, Rich Rodriguez, athletic director Wren Baker had nothing but wonderful things to say about the new coach returning home.
Baker shared that many showed interest in the job, vetting dozens and interviewing 15. Overall it was the passionate West Virginia fans who drew the candidates in, Baker said.
“We had some qualities we desired in our next head coach. Someone who understands and will embrace West Virginia values: work ethic, passion, grit, and determination that makes us Mountaineers,” said Baker.
Baker shared that it is a privilege to represent Mountaineer Nation and wanted the next head coach to understand that. Rodriguez stood out overall. He led the Mountaineers to four Big East Championship victories and five bowl games during his seven seasons with the Mountaineers over 20 years ago.
“Not only has he won at a high level, but he won here,” said Baker.
Baker is confident that he has found the best candidate to lead the Mountaineers to a winning season and various championships.
