Chad Scott Speaks on Garrett Greene and Loss to Baylor

West Virginia offensive coordinator Chad Scott spoke about the team’s recent home loss to Baylor and quarterback Garrett Greene.

Scott was asked about the issues the Mountaineers’ offense faced in the third quarter of the game.

“Didn’t execute. I mean, we really just didn’t execute at all. Had opportunities, and we didn’t capitalize on opportunities,” he said.

Quarterback Garrett Greene, who missed the past few weeks due to an injury, returned as the starter against Baylor. A reporter noted that Greene played without fear of re-injury and asked Scott about what that toughness means for the team.

“That’s huge,” Scott said. “He impacts the other 10 guys on the field around him, and when they see him, the way he plays. That’s why the guys did a phenomenal job continuing to fight up until the last play of the game—when he threw the touchdown pass to Kole Taylor. When he plays with energy and confidence, he inspires the other guys around him… Just gotta be able to execute when it matters the most.”

Greene recorded 39 passing attempts and 22 rushing attempts in the game, totaling 61 plays. A reporter asked Scott if that workload was too high and whether that many opportunities are planned for Greene moving forward.

“That’s just what the game presents itself,” Scott said. “It’s not a certain number we say, we want him to get this, want him to get that. We just want to go out there and establish the run and control the possession of the game.”

Scott also added that Greene’s ability to keep his eyes downfield while rolling out is another strength.

“What he’s done a good job of is when he rolls out, at least he keeps his eyes downfield where he’s able to find guys,” Scott said.

The Mountaineers will face UCF at home this weekend, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
