West Virginia head coach Neal Brown has been asked about the quarterback situation a few times this season, even before Garrett Greene’s injury. However, with Greene returning to practice and Nicco Marchiol remaining undefeated as a starter the question only becomes more intriguing.
On Monday, Brown wouldn’t comment on who will start against Baylor or other specifics regarding the quarterback situation. He said both will prepare, and he’ll make a decision as the week progresses.
“We’ll get both quarterbacks ready (for Baylor). Y’all can ask a bunch of questions about them but I’m really not going to say anything,” Brown said. ” I want to see how Garrett does. He practiced a little bit last Wednesday, but today was the first day he really practiced. And he’ll practice tomorrow. And then, we’ll make some decisions as the week [goes on], but really not going to comment on it (the quarterback situation).”
Saturday, Marchiol won his third game as a starter, second consecutive this season, while Greene was available as the emergency quarterback. The other win came against Texas Tech last year.
What Brown did answer and comment on is what he’d like to see from each quarterback that could impact his decision.
“Since the Kansas State game, he did a little bit of seven-on-seven work last Wednesday and that’s really the only work he’s had,” Brown said of Greene. “Tomorrow (Tuesday) is going to be the first 11 on 11 work. And so, I need to see him in 11 on 11 work before we make a decision, whether he’s ready to go.”
When asked the same question about Marchiol, Brown mentioned how he didn’t play as well against Cincinnati as he did against Arizona, keying in on fundamentals.
“Nicco played really well against Arizona, not so well on Saturday,” Brown said of Marchiol. “He just has to be consistent with his fundamentals that’s the biggest difference between him being super, super efficient versus Arizona and playing at a high level and then him not playing as well on Saturday. It’s all correctable things and it’s the little thing.”
If Brown has not made a decision by Thursday, when he speaks on his radio show, fans may not know of it until Saturday, when one of the two quarterbacks trots on the field to lead the offense.
