West Virginia picked up their third-straight road win against Cincinnati on Saturday, defeating them 31-24.
After the game, WVU head coach Neal Brown touched upon the meaningfulness of the win, the offense, the defense and a slight update on quarterback Garrett Greene.
“Great win keeps us in the conference race. 1-0 in November. Now we gotta come back home,” Brown said.
Speaking on the offense, which struggled, totaling just 248 yards combined, Brown said, “That’s the worst we’ve played in two years. Just flat, not good enough.”
Brown praised the defense, the key contributors in the win, saying, “I thought we were really physical on defense.” He also added, “I’m really happy for our defensive staff, really happy for our defensive players.” He mentioned that the defense had struggled in prior weeks and that it was rewarding to see them perform so well.
“I’m happy for him. I’m not surprised. He’s called defensive plays before,” Brown said about interim defensive coordinator Jeff Koonz, who had his first game calling plays for the Mountaineers’ defense.
When asked about Greene, who started the season but has been battling injuries, Brown explained, “He would’ve been an emergency. He didn’t get cleared till later in the week. We will make a decision on that early in the week.”
WVU secures a much-needed win and will return to Milan Puskar Stadium for a 4 p.m. start next Saturday against the Baylor Bears.
