Big 12 football competition continues to remain strong and close through 10 weeks.
Out of the 16 teams in the conference, 14 can still have a shot at the championship. The two teams that are not in contention are Arizona (1-5 in conference) and Oklahoma State (0-6).
West Virginia sits right around the middle of the pack with a 3-2 conference record, tied with Arizona State and Cincinnati for sixth (not taking tiebreakers into account). They’ll play Cincinnati this weekend in a game that can prove to be huge down the stretch.
If the Mountaineers win out, they would have an 8-4 record( 7-2 in Big 12 play). However, ESPN’s FPI gives them just a 0.4% chance to win the conference.
According to ESPN’s FPI, the two teams with the best chance to win the Big 12 are No. 9 BYU (36.5%) and No. 17 Iowa State (21.5%). BYU is 5-0 in conference play, while Iowa State, which defeated WVU, is 4-1.
The other teams currently above West Virginia in the Big 12 standings are No. 20 Colorado (4-1), No. 19 Kansas State (4-2) and Texas Tech (4-2). Kansas State has already defeated WVU, while the Mountaineers will play Texas Tech in the last game of the season.
The 2024 Big 12 Championship will take place on Dec. 7 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
