It was not the performance backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol or the team had hoped for in the second half of a loss to Kansas State back on Oct. 19.
Garrett Greene, the starting quarterback was injured in the first half and couldn’t return in the second as Marchiol took over. WVU was down 17-10 entering the second quarter but lost 45-18.
“Yeah, football, the sport is so unpredictable at times and that’s why it’s so essential to just have that memory of a goldfish,” Marchiol said when asked about not losing confidence after the loss. “I had a short memory of that week and I knew that was something I didn’t want to put back on tape.”
While Marchiol didn’t have any turnovers, he was ineffective overall against K-State. He completed just six passes on 13 attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked twice and didn’t have a single rushing yard.
With Greene’s status still up in the air entering the next week, it was a quick turnaround for Marchiol as he had to prepare as the team’s starter.
“So it just made me work harder throughout the week, and it showed in our performance,” Marchiol said.
Starting in place of Greene against Arizona, Marchiol led West Virginia to a 31-26 victory on Saturday. He completed 18 passes on 22 attempts (82%) for 198 yards and two touchdowns, he rushed for 39 yards.
