According to a report by Pete Thamel, West Virginia’s starting quarterback, Garrett Greene, is considered doubtful for Saturday’s game against Arizona and Nicco Marchiol will start.
Greene was injured in the first half of the Mountaineers loss to Kansas State last week. Marchiol came in and was ultimately unable to get the job done.
With Marchiol expected to get the start, let’s look at what happened during his only other start in his college football career.
Last season, Greene went down in the Backyard Brawl, and Marchiol finished out the game, helping WVU win. With Greene still out, he went on to start their next game vs. Texas Tech at home.
The lefty attempted 21 passes, completing 12 for 78 yards and a touchdown. He threw two interceptions and was sacked once.
He had 72 rushing yards on the ground as the Mountaineers went on to win 20-13 over the Red Raiders. Kole Taylor was the top receiver that game, with three catches for 39 yards and the touchdown.
Now returning to his home state, Marchiol will look to lead West Virginia to another victory in his second career start.
Kickoff Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST and the game will be televised on FS1.
